How To Stick With Good Habits Every Day By Using The “Paper Clip Strategy?”

The paper clip strategy was first begun by a 23 year-old-stock broker named Trent Dyrsmid in 1993. Every morning, he began his day with two jars kept on his work desk. One of them had 120 paper clips. The other container had nothing inside it. He took the paper clips one by one from the jar and put them into the other one as and when he finished his tasks for the day. This routine got him a lot of success soon.

The Paper Clip Strategy

Dyrsmid explained that he never wasted any time in reading the stock quotes or the newspaper. He believed that success was obtained when one committed oneself to the fundamental tasks again and again. The paper clips can be used as the fundamental tasks that you need to perform. These can your workouts for the day, healthy food, reading good books, etc. One has to be consistent with their goals. Only then can one achieve them.

How Does The Paper Clip Strategy Work?

The paper clips work as a visual cue that motivates you to perform each task with more consistency. You cannot skip any task if you want to get the filled jar empty by the end of the day. Another woman used a similar strategy of hairpins whenever she completed a page of her book. As soon as she finished writing one page, she would shift one hairpin in the empty container. Having a visual cue gives you the motivation to complete the pending task. Visual measures like these give you satisfaction and are evidence of your progress. When done repeatedly, these reinforce your behavior and make you feel good.

How Do Visual Cues Work?

They Remind You To Start A Behavior Or A Task

We often decide to take up a new habit or a task and continue it for long. But as days progress, we find our motivation dwindling. With visual cues present, they act as constant reminders that our thought of behavior or task is still pending. Visual stimulus like a container full of paper clips, etc. make it easier for us to stick with good habits.

These Display Your Progress

The paper clip strategy is a kind of measuring system that monitors your tasks. You can look at the number of clips you have shifted to the empty container to know about your progress made in a day. Consistency is an important factor to be successful, and the paper clips teach you to be more consistent.

Paper Clips Motivate You To Continue

Whenever you look at the half-filled jar, you realize how much you have already achieved towards your goal and how much is still left. It is proof of your hard work and motivates you to continue your journey for the day and not to give up in the middle.
